Mircea Craciun Growing beyond Borders, CEO of Eco Garden Construct, on entrepreneurship, sustainable landscaping and building a European business

With more than 15 years of leadership at Eco Garden Construct, Mircea Craciun has helped develop the company from its Romanian foundations into a business with ambitions across Europe. With an academic background in Agronomy from the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Cluj-Napoca, his approach combines technical knowledge with entrepreneurship, business development and a belief in the long-term value of well-managed green spaces.

Today, Eco Garden Construct operates across professional landscaping, green-space development, sports infrastructure and sustainable urban regeneration. The company’s expansion into the UK has added a new dimension to that journey β€” one that requires the business to adapt to a different market while retaining the standards and expertise developed over more than a decade.

From Agronomy to Entrepreneurship

TIMES CEO: Your background is in agronomy. What first drew you towards entrepreneurship and landscaping?

Mircea Craciun replied, β€œMy entrepreneurial journey has always been closely connected to my professional background in agronomy and to my belief that green spaces have an important role in improving quality of life. Over time, I came to understand that landscaping is far more than planting trees, maintaining lawns or creating attractive outdoor spaces. It brings together technical knowledge, engineering, environmental responsibility, project management and long-term maintenance. That broader perspective shaped the way I approached business and became an important part of my leadership journey at Eco Garden Construct. My objective has always been to build a company that delivers high-quality work while contributing to healthier, greener and more sustainable communities.”

Building the Business

TIMES CEO: Since becoming CEO in 2011, how has your thinking about Eco Garden Construct changed?

Mircea Craciun replied, β€œWhen I became CEO, the focus was on building a strong foundation in professional landscaping and delivering quality projects. As the company developed, I became increasingly focused on the systems, people, capabilities and project management processes required to build a business that could operate at a much larger level. The ambition has also evolved. We are no longer thinking only about individual landscaping projects. We are building a European business with capabilities across landscaping, sports infrastructure and green-space regeneration. For me, growth is meaningful when it is supported by the right people, the right standards and the ability to deliver consistently.”

What Landscaping Really Means

TIMES CEO: Many people still see landscaping as primarily aesthetic. How do you see the industry?

Mircea Craciun replied, β€œLandscaping is much more than appearance. Outdoor spaces are living systems, and they need to perform over time. That requires the right plant selection, appropriate materials, responsible resource management, technical execution and, importantly, proper maintenance. A successful landscape should not only look good when it is completed. It should remain functional, healthy and resilient as it matures. That is why I see professional landscaping as a combination of creativity, technical expertise and long-term responsibility.”

Green Spaces and Urban Life

TIMES CEO: What role do you believe professional landscaping can play in the future of cities?

Mircea Craciun replied, β€œGreen spaces can fundamentally change how people experience a city. Parks, public spaces, sports facilities, planting and regenerated landscapes can create places that people use, enjoy and feel connected to. The objective should not simply be to create something visually appealing. It should be to create spaces that work for people and continue to perform over time. Better green spaces can contribute to more attractive, functional and enjoyable urban environments, while supporting the wider goal of sustainable development.”

The UK Challenge

TIMES CEO: What has expanding Eco Garden Construct from Romania into the UK taught you about building a business internationally?

Mircea Craciun replied, β€œEntering a new market requires adaptability, patience and a willingness to understand that local expectations may be different. The UK has its own business culture, operational requirements, customer expectations and competitive environment. For us, entering the UK has therefore been about much more than establishing a presence in another country. It has meant building the right capabilities, understanding the market, developing relationships based on trust and maintaining the standards we have established in our existing business. International expansion also forces you to keep learning, and I see that as a strength.”

Growth with Responsibility

TIMES CEO: Is it possible to pursue commercial growth while remaining genuinely committed to environmental responsibility?

Mircea Craciun replied, β€œI believe growth and environmental responsibility should reinforce each other rather than compete. A modern landscaping business should be capable of creating commercial value while also delivering positive environmental and social outcomes. That means thinking about sustainability throughout the project lifecycle β€” from planning and material selection through implementation and maintenance. Responsible growth is not simply about becoming bigger. It is about building a business that is successful, resilient and conscious of the impact its work has on the communities and environments in which it operates.”

Why Sports Infrastructure?

TIMES CEO: Eco Garden Construct has also developed expertise in sports infrastructure. Why does that matter to your wider vision?

Mircea Craciun replied, β€œSports infrastructure is a natural extension of our expertise because high-quality sports environments depend on many of the same disciplines as professional landscaping: technical execution, appropriate materials and surfaces, drainage, maintenance and long-term performance. Our experience in landscaping gives us a strong foundation for sports-related infrastructure and the maintenance of these environments. More broadly, sports spaces contribute to healthier communities, so this area fits naturally with our wider ambition to create outdoor environments that deliver lasting value.”

The CEO’s Leadership Philosophy

TIMES CEO: What have you learned about leadership during your time building the company?

Mircea Craciun replied, β€œTrust, responsibility, flexibility, teamwork and continuous improvement are central to my leadership approach. A company can only deliver strong results when people understand their responsibilities and have the opportunity to contribute their knowledge and ideas. Leadership is not simply about making decisions. It is also about creating an environment where people can perform at their best. Whether someone works directly with green spaces or contributes through engineering, project management, sales or business development, every role matters. Strong teams are built when people understand both their responsibilities and the purpose behind their work.”

Innovation without Losing the Fundamentals

TIMES CEO: Landscaping is changing rapidly. What do you think the industry needs to embrace?

Mircea Craciun replied, β€œInnovation is important because cities, communities and client expectations are constantly changing. The industry needs to remain open to new technologies, materials, methods and approaches to maintenance. At the same time, innovation should have a purpose. The best solutions are those that improve performance, sustainability, efficiency or the experience of the people using a space. I see the future of landscaping becoming increasingly integrated, bringing together environmental responsibility, technology, biodiversity, efficient maintenance and high-quality execution.”

Building a European Business

TIMES CEO: You have ambitions beyond Romania and the UK. What does success look like for Eco Garden Construct across Europe?

Mircea Craciun replied, β€œMy vision is to build a strong European business recognised for quality, professionalism, innovation and sustainable development. We want to continue developing our capabilities across landscaping, sports infrastructure and green-space regeneration, strengthening our presence in Romania and the UK while exploring opportunities across Europe. But growth should never be the objective simply for its own sake. I want the business to create projects with lasting value and to demonstrate how professional landscaping can contribute to better cities and communities.”

The Entrepreneur’s Advice

TIMES CEO: What would you say to someone trying to build a business in landscaping or construction today?

Mircea Craciun replied, β€œBuild the business around quality, people and long-term relationships rather than short-term opportunities. You need to understand your market, develop your expertise continuously and be prepared to adapt when circumstances change. In landscaping and construction, reputation is particularly important because clients need confidence that a project will be delivered professionally and maintained properly. People are equally important. A company’s capabilities ultimately depend on the quality and commitment of its team. Sustainable growth comes from consistently delivering value and learning from every project.”

Looking Beyond the Business

TIMES CEO: When you look ahead, what would you ultimately like Mircea Craciun and Eco Garden Construct to be known for?

Mircea Craciun replied, β€œI would like Eco Garden Construct to be known as a company that combines professional excellence with a genuine commitment to sustainable development. Personally, I want my work to contribute to an organisation that creates opportunities for its people, delivers meaningful projects for clients and makes a positive contribution to the communities where we operate. Our journey from Romania towards a broader European presence is ongoing, and there is significant potential ahead. Ultimately, I want to demonstrate that a successful landscaping and sports infrastructure business can also play an important role in creating greener, healthier and more sustainable environments. I believe people are happier when they live in a greener world, and that belief remains at the heart of our long-term vision.”
