Medvedev fined after US Open outburst

Former US Open winner Daniil Medvedev has been given a large fine after losing in the first round in dramatic fashion.

The 29-year-old Russian was beaten by France’s Benjamin Bonzi, but the match turned chaotic when a photographer walked onto the court, upsetting Medvedev.

The United States Tennis Association fined him nearly £31,500 ($42,500). He was charged $30,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct and $12,500 for smashing his racket against a chair. This means he loses about 40% of his first-round prize money.

After the match, Medvedev admitted he expected a big punishment, saying: “I’m getting a big enough fine, so if I speak, I’m in big trouble.”

The drama began at 5-4 in the third set when Bonzi was serving on match point. A photographer stepped onto the court, and the umpire ordered Bonzi to replay his first serve. Medvedev was furious and argued with the umpire, also firing up the New York crowd.

The match was delayed for over six minutes before play continued. Bonzi couldn’t finish the match then, and Medvedev forced a deciding fifth set.

In the end, Bonzi won, and Medvedev reacted by smashing his racket before sitting quietly on his chair for several minutes, clearly upset, before leaving the court.
